What is a Business Citation

What is a Business Citation?

Definition

A business citation is any case that your business name, address, phone, and website are listed together on a page on the web.  There are many different websites that may choose to cite your business online.

When Google is crawling for your business information, it’s crawling for the business citation.  Google then compares each citation it finds with your business information found on the website of record for your business.

Examples of Business Citations:

  • Primary Local Listings: Local listings such as Google My Business, Bing Local, and Yelp are all considered to be citations of your business.
  • Geographic or Industry Specific Platforms: These are websites that are specifically designed to advise their visitors on specific industries such as “the cleaning industry” or “all local businesses in Roswell GA” and so on.
  • Other Business Citations: While all local listings are business citations, not all business citations are local listings.  There are websites outside of a traditional local listing websites that may have reason to reference your business such as blogs, government databases, news sites, and others.
